Raising awareness as Buena Vista mobile home residents faced eviction

Most people in Palo Alto drive by Buena Vista mobile home park, which is hidden behind a gas station in the heart of Palo Alto, and never know it's there. But the park is everything to the families who call it home - and the landowner is trying to sell the land for development.

The community is home to 400 residents occupying 117 mobile homes. And it's one of the few remaining options for low-income housing in Palo Alto. Many of the residents who live at Buena Vista work in the area's service industry as grocery store clerks, cafeteria workers and Stanford University maintenance staff.

SVCF got involved about two years ago -- and one of the ways the community foundation helped was to identify a donor to fund a grant that would pay for a documentary to be made about the park. The result was the film "Notes from Buena Vista," by filmmaker Elizabeth Lo.
